The Basics of Ergonomics

Ergonomic refers to any office item designed to support maximum comfort and efficiency. When looking for an ergonomic chair, check for features like:

Adjustable lumbar support: The lumbar bar on the back of the chair can be adjusted to provide optimal lower back support.
Adjustable armrests: adjustable armrests allow you to adjust the armrest position so it comfortably fits the user. The ideal ergonomic position keeps your arms parallel to the ground and where they’re resting comfortably and naturally on the armrests—without straining the shoulders.
Adjustable seat height: With adjustable seat height, shorter users can avoid the discomfort of their feet dangling above the ground, and taller users do not have to worry about their knees being raised in an uncomfortably high position.
Adjustable seat depth: Taller individuals need more space in a seat (shorter folks need less), and the seat depth adjustment addresses this issue.
Adjustable seat tilt: The seat tilt mechanism allows you to adjust the angle of the seat to best support the user’s body.

Types of Ergonomic Chairs

Task chair: A task chair is another name for a computer chair or ergonomic desk chair. It has been designed to support independent work.
Gaming chairs: Gaming chairs are designed for long hours in front of the computer and often have additional features, like headrests.
Big and tall chair: Big and tall chairs have a higher weight capacity, allowing them to accommodate a broader range of body types and sizes.
Computer chairs: Computer chair is an umbrella term that refers to chairs designed for use at standard desks. The term “computer chairs” often includes other chair types, like ergonomic chairs, executive chairs, and task chairs.
Executive chairs: An executive chair is a premium office chair with a mid or high back. Executive chairs provide supreme comfort, pairing elevated design with ergonomic features.

Other Ergonomic Features to Consider

Adjustable back height: The back of your chair plays a very important role in supporting your spine throughout the workday. This adjustment slides up and down—it should be adjusted so the chair’s lumbar curve fits into and supports the user’s lower back curve.
Adjustable headrest: A headrest gives the user a place to rest their head, thereby reducing the weight the neck must support during recline. If you are experiencing constant neck pain, a chair with a headrest may be a great choice.
Enhanced arm adjustments: Look for flip arms, adjustable arm width, adjustable arm depth, adjustable arm pivot, and adjustable arm pad depth (and/or pivot).
Adjustable foot ring height (for ergonomic stools): A foot ring offers a place for users to rest their feet when sitting on a stool. With an adjustable foot ring, all individuals may be accommodated with a place to rest their feet.
Specialized chair tilts: Options include synchro tilt, knee tilt, single-point tilt, adjustable tilt tension, or a tilt lock.
